9/11The United States spends 892 billion dollars every year to protect its citizens and its territory. It is the “best protected country in the world,” according to President George W. Bush. Nevertheless, on September 11th the very heart of America was attacked; 3000 defenseless American citizens were killed on their own soil. According to the official version, this tragedy was the result of a well-conducted operation by nineteen hijackers of Arab origin, commanded by a man that lives in a cave in Afghanistan.
Who in America should be blamed for the failure to protect the US territory? According to the official version, the result of a hasty and incomplete investigation, the chain of civil and military command on that day had fallen victim to a spontaneous series of accidents and coincidences.
This explanation lacks credibility. Statisticians have calculated that the probability of so many negative events occurring all at the same time is one in sixty-two million. This leaves us with two, and only two, possible explanations: this breakdown was either the result of government inefficiency and negligence, or of government complicity. When the United States was attacked at Pearl Harbor, 2341 soldiers and 68 civilians lost their lives.
Walter Short, Commander of the Hawaii Defense Army and Husband Kimmel, Commander of the Pacific Fleet were held responsible, were disciplined and were removed from duty as a result of their negligence. After the catastrophe of September 11th, no one was either disciplined or removed from duty: not Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, nor those responsible for the civil security and Air Force Defense of the United States.
Therefore, the official version of events would suggest neither inefficiency nor negligence in the chain of command. Considering the tragedy that occurred in the best-defended country in the world, there is no other logical explanation than this: on September 11th the chain of defense command had been deactivated.
The second theory, complicity, remains the only reasonable explanation. Five years on, no credible evidence has been presented to explain exactly how the attacks were organized, planned and put into action. Everyone knows (or thinks) it was orchestrated by Osama Bin Laden who sent 19 members of Al Qaeda to hijack planes and fly them on suicide missions.
The fact is that there is no concrete evidence that implicates Osama Bin Laden, Al Qaeda or any of the 19 hijackers. There has been a lack of serious investigation and insufficient sharing of information on this case. On 11 March 2002, George Tenet, at the time director of the United States Central Intelligence Agency, declared, “That summer we had received some general information that terrorists were planning some major operations in the United States. However, we never had enough information to prevent what happened.”
Two months later, on May 8, 2002, Robert Mueller, director of the Unites States Federal Bureau of Investigations, stated: “There was nothing we could have done to predict or prevent the attacks.” Dan Rather, America’s most famous anchorman, said on BBC NewsNight “We didn’t investigate because we were afraid of being lynched.” Many questions have arisen; too many black holes with no answer.
