Sony Electronics and Belo, a large americane
media and broadcasting company, are working together to merge digital news production and content management infrastructure for Belo's television and print properties.
Over the next few years Belo intends to install up to 18 additional Newsbase video news server systems at its broadcast facilities to join its ground- breaking installation at TXCN, Belo's 24-hour regional cable news channel with coverage throughout the state of Texas.
In addition, Sony and Belo Interactive, Belo's Internet subsidiary, intend to join forces to develop an industry-leading digital content management system to archive and share news content through all of Belo's media properties.
"Belo is one of the prime examples of a media rich company fully exploring the potential of sharing media assets across all its diverse media properties - including television stations, newspapers, and its regional cable news channels," says Stephen Jacobs, senior vice president, networked business systems for Sony Electronics' Broadcast and Professional Company.
"When implemented this system will enable Belo to instantaneously share material acquired by one of its stations with its other newsrooms to offer breaking news and information to its viewers, readers and users at multiple locations."
As envisioned in the first phase of the project, a centrally located Sony
PetaSite storage library will link to each station's video news server to
store and exchange content. During 2001, Belo intends to install Newsbase video news server systems at its Texas television stations: WFAA-TV in Dallas, KHOU-TV in Houston, KVUE-TV in Austin, and KENS-TV in San Antonio.
"Belo is looking forward to working with Sony to develop the full potential of a robust digital content production and asset management
architecture," said Jon Roe, Belo's vice president/chief technology officer. "Once complete, the system will allow us to leverage content produced by any of Belo's media properties nationwide."
