Roche and Decode plan to develop new drugs
12 September 2001
Hopes for new treatments for two of the Western World's biggest public health challenges were raised to day on the news that Swiss pharmaceutical company,
Roche and Iceland's biotech company, DeCODE Genetics have mapped the genes for obesity and clinical anxiety. The genes themselves were discovered by DeCODE.
An estimated 25 per cent of US and European adults are overweight and related health problems account for 10 per cent of healthcare budgets. Clinical anxiety and related disorders are the most common mental illnesses and affect 19 million people in the US alone. The two companies now plan to develop new drugs. Any effective treatments for either disorder would be potential blockbusters.
