More than half (65%) of organisations believe that the 'virtual office of the future' is already here, in the form of collaborative content management.
This is according to a survey of over 50 UK IT professionals by Tridion, the enterprise content management specialist.
However, in the same research, few of the respondents had any degree of confidence that UK companies were prepared for the 'data explosion' that virtual offices would bring in terms of unstructured content. More than half said that only 10-25% of companies were prepared; over a quarter said that less than 10% of companies were ready.
The research was carried out at a Tridion partner event and the 50 participants were questioned on their views on content and data management.
"The 'virtual office of the future' is one of those buzz-phrases that's been around for some time," says Alun Cope-Morgan, managing director at Tridion UK and Ireland. "Pundits predicted that 'in the future' we would all be working in a virtual office, no doubt living off vitamin pills and wearing space suits. Fortunately, though, the reality is a little more pragmatic. The emergence of technologies that enable collaborative working, and new means of communication that consign the oral tradition of business to history, mean we really can move away from the confines of our office desks."
"The software to enable meaningful, safe interaction between staff and partners is already here - but it does have to be managed. If it's to be effective, businesses have to be prepared too for the shifts in working patterns, the impact on staff and the increase in information and data that this new way of working will bring."
"Only then will UK companies be able to totally embrace the working environment, and practices, of the future." Cope-Morgan concluded
