Israel suffers escalating hack attacks, says Intelligence Unit.
The Israeli domain ".il" has
been the biggest victim of web defacements (548) in the Middle East (1,295) by a wide margin over the period July 1999 to mid-April 2002
inclusive.
This includes the start of the second Intifada, the
Palestinian uprising, in September 2000.
Israel has suffered 42% (548/1295) of the Middle East overt hack attacks, while Turkey (13%), Morocco (12%) and Egypt (12%) were also
targeted.
Israel's digital risk is greater because it has the most
Internet connections (1.1 million) in the Middle East (more than all 22 Arab countries combined).
During the past 14 days, Israel was the victim of 67% (10/15) of significant web defacements in the Middle East according to the mi2g
Intelligence Unit.
DK Matai, mi2g's Chairman & CEO said: "The tense situation in the Middle East is reflected in both covert and overt hack attacks. Historically, we have seen similar asymmetric attacks develop in the case of the NATO-Serbia war in April 1999, the China-Taiwan standoff in August 1999
and the US-China spy plane incident in April 2001."
Asymmetric warfare continues to be a barometer for political tensions around the world. The most active anti-Israel hacker group, which claims to be Egyptian, started its activities just weeks after 11th September. Other Middle Eastern countries - Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Jordan - have also been hit in April by politically motivated hack
attacks, many international in origin.
mi2g was quoted in the 2002 annual CSI / FBI Computer Crime and Security Survey that was released on 7th April this year.
The authoritative survey, in its seventh year, quotes mi2g's 8th January 2002 digital
crime statistics for various international and national domains during 2001.
Israeli websites with the ".il" domain were defaced 413 times in 2001 - up 220% from the year before.
