A comparison of global Internet usage between April 2001 and April 2002 showed that time spent online per month increased nearly 13 percent and number of sessions per month increased nearly 9 percent across 21 countries in the past year, according to Nielsen//NetRatings, audience measurement and analysis firm.
Overall, the active global Internet population at home grew nearly 18 percent year-over-year.
“The number of people accessing and using the Internet around the world continues to post steady growth,” said Richard Goosey, international chief of measurement science, NetRatings.
“The active Internet universe – or the number of people with Internet access who actually logged online – showed a double digit increase from last year, rising 18 percent, while the overall Internet universe was also up nearly 16 percent. The strong increases in time spent online and monthly Internet sessions go a step further to show that surfers are making more time to include the Internet in their daily media diet.
“This follows the pattern of the U.S., which showed significant increases in online metrics over the same time period,” Goosey said. “While the Internet has had more time to establish itself with the U.S. audience, the continued growth in U.S. Internet usage is spurred by impressive gains in broadband access, as nearly a quarter of the Internet population, or 25 million users, now surf through a high-speed connection at home. Simultaneously, surfing sessions, domains visited, pages viewed and time spent online in the U.S. experienced double-digit increases over the year.
“Outside the U.S., the vast majority of surfers connect through a 56k modem or less, meaning the global growth is attributed to the fact that acceptance of the Internet continues to increase as people perceive benefits from its content, regardless of their access speed.”
The results are from Nielsen//NetRatings’ Global Internet Index, which provides the only worldwide measurement of Web audience and usage patterns across 23 countries comprising more than 84 percent of the global Internet audience universe.
Comparison based on the following 21 countries: Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Brazil, the U.S., Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden and the UK.
Average usage in April 2002 registered a more modest showing when compared to March 2002, with an increase only in the number of unique domains visited.
Comparison based on the following 23 countries: Austria, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the UK and the U.S.
The list of top 25 global properties for April showed ranking jumps by Sony and T-Online.
“The Sony property showcases trailers for heavily marketed summer movies such as “Spider-Man” and “Men In Black II”, while T-Online continues to find success through providing a wide variety of up to the minute content tailored to local audiences.” Goosey said.
