Summer starts today in the northern hemisphere, I think. Feels good. The implementation of CMS technology can have huge impact on the structure of any social organization. Today, most people work in offices, buildings and cities that are organized around the manual ‘workflow’ of processes. Warehouse in the basement, on the first floor marketing, the second floor accounts, third floor production and archives and boardroom at the top, perhaps. Their work schedule is built around their physical presence in those places, nine to five, plus overtime. But as we enter the ‘future’ (c’mon hurry) time space coordinates become increasingly irrelevant, operations can be run virtually, and changing our old habits will be more a matter of mindset, than of organizational structure. CMS architectures are evolving very fast. In a newsletter last winter I wondered if there might have been a convergence ahead between CMS technology and Portal technology. Over the spring we have seen an array of partnerships and collaboration announcements among vendors from both markets. That’s how convergence starts. I guess it will go further, the two sectors eventually may merge altogether. As I scrutinize what may lie at the far horizon I envisage one industry, segmented to cater for a variety of vertical industries, organizational requirements and functional requirements, but the distinction between portal and website will disappear. CMS vendors are increasingly becoming aware that their products need to look outwards. That although providing a neat website publishing mechanism is already quite an ambitious goal, the ultimate CMS challenge is far greater: enabling transactions and connecting individuals and systems to distributed virtual enterprises is what they really need in the long term. And more holiday time. (summer, remember?) The vendors battle for CMS technology is a little gruesome, let’s admit it. It is the ability of IT producers to stand out for breath of scope and long term vision that will help them survive and win. Looking at the bigger picture helps.
