We have been following the progress of XML adoption in this industry For quite a while. The first time I heard about the term was a few years ago, when I interviewed the CEO of Phone.com. He explained to me what XML was and how was it different from HTML, and how this new ‘lighter’ format was more suitable for portable devices, at the time everybody was thinking WAP. Since then we have seen growing interest and attention, but it is only becoming clear now, I think, how versatile and indispensable XML is. I have been chasing the ‘single source publishing’ holy grail as a topic to develop editorially. The best piece of writing I found had been produced rather anonymously by a guy called PG Bartlett, at Arbortext. I chased him and published his article, which I personally think touches on several fundamental points that everyone involved in CM should bear very well in mind. We since hear that Interwoven teamed up with Arbortext and other XML specialists to expand their capabilities. Nice to see the market respond. The key of the matter, as far as I understand it, is the following: XML in its various flavours will facilitate data exchange processes, both in terms of content input and output. But ‘translating’ the content into xml is not optimal, as it could be an expensive process. Much better is getting the CM system to produce xml natively, to optimise content transformation and delivery to various other formats as required by the various delivery platforms. Of course this is what we recommend as a future proof function of a CMs and Would be interested in hearing if someone thinks otherwise . Another contribution came from John L Symon, of Aiim Europe, whom we also recently met for a good chat about the industry and its development. We were pleased to hear that the Aiim.org acquire our content via one of our syndication partners, screamingmedia. Thanks to our new ‘own’ XML feed, we’ll be able to enter syndication deals directly, without intermediaries, and would encourage any company in the content technology space to get in touch to license our content for their intranets. Make sure your coleagues find all their sensitive content information on their desktops every morning. Rest assured that content management, and syndication, and digital rights management and other internet policy and technology issues are all interrelated. It is worth keeping an eye out For more than just ‘content management news’, as so many things happening in this industry affect each other. Couple of weeks ago we attended our first CM show in London, organised by Penton, and met up briefly with some players. Nice to be witnessing the emergence of a new industry. Makes us feel part of history somehow.
