Content Management is packed with action. Recent weeks have seen an interesting number of announcements. The latest news of Arbortext acquisition is an interesting one, as it places content management at the heart of product lifecycle management. Just confirming once again that content , for those who understand it, is at the heart of operations. "Arbortext should help PTC further complete its expansive PLM system by significantly enhancing its documentation abilities. .. This is even more critical as products increase in complexity and decrease development time. Examples of these types of complex documents are product and service manuals, catalogs, and training materials..... As an example, PTC will have many of the necessary tools to enter the process manufacturing market as labeling, regulatory submissions, and clinical reporting are core components of an effective system" say AMR analysts (www.amrresearch.com/Content/View.asp?pmillid=18438) An industry source speculates possible outcomes of the deal: "PTC has no overlapping products with Epic, so we do not expect the Arbortext product line to go away. While the naming subject is open, one would not expect PTC to rename the Epic products per se... PTC works in a world that is increasingly turning to XML as its recording and transport mechanism, so they should be able to leverage much of ATI's technology and products in their own offerings. PTC has a large and worldwide sales organization along with 35,000 clients, so we might expect to see their sales and marketing philosophy make itself felt in the Arbortext organization. This should be good for Arbortext by opening new avenues to sell and deliver products, but may have an immediate impact on the ATI sales force to the extent that PTC's approach to sales does not parallel ATI's. Our experience is that sales is one area where acquisition makes itself felt early. PTC's considerable development ability should provide additional resources for the ATI development effort, perhaps leading to acceleration of some of their product enhancements (although during the integration phase, there could be some loss of productivity.) " Earlier Hummingbird acquired Reddot, a significant challenger in the space (www.contentmanager.eu.com/providers.htm) And there is a link to an interview with Paul Everitt of Zope Europe.
