The latest version of the e-Government Metadata Standard (e-GMS), one of the technical standards underpinning the UK eGovernment strategy, was released last week by the Cabinet Office.
The e-GMS sets out UK Government policy covering the core set of data *elements* needed for effective retrieval and management of official information.
Adherence to the specifications set out in the e-GMS is mandatory for all government information systems.
The new version of the e-GMS marks the first major revision to the document since its original publication in April 2002.
The latest update reflects the need for the specifications to be compatible with the new "Requirement for Electronic Records Management Systems: Metadata Standard" document published late last year by the Public Record Office. Many of the changes and additions to the second version are also taken from the international
*Dublin Core* metadata standard (ISO 15836).
The Office of the e-Envoy commented that the new e-GMS would "better meet the information retrieval and management needs of the consumers and of government, enabling eGovernment services to be designed around the needs of citizens."
