Macrovision Corporation, provider of in copy protection and digital rights management (DRM) technologies, and Broadcom Corporation, provider of integrated circuits enabling broadband communications, are working together to enable Macrovision's MacroSafe digital copy protection and secure media management technology through Broadcom's Digital Rights Management (DRM) Tool Kit for cable and digital broadcast satellite set-top box (STB) chip sets and reference designs.
The Broadcom DRM Tool Kit consists of a suite of silicon solutions and software drivers that provide end-to-end security and rights management of digital content in home networking and entertainment applications. Included in the suite of services are decryption and encryption engines, authentication services, tamper detection services, and digital recording management services.
The combination of Broadcom's integrated set-top box ICs and robust STB reference design development platforms with Macrovision's MacroSafe secure media distribution and management system is designed to enable the following:
- security and digital rights management throughout the home and secure sharing with other entertainment appliances;
-- new business models and revenue streams to the service provider; and
-- a complement to existing conditional access infrastructure.
"In today's competitive cable and satellite TV markets, system/service operators are looking for additional ways to add new services for their subscribers, to create customer loyalty and reduce customer churn. MacroSafe is the tool that enables system/service operators to accomplish all of these goals, enabling VOD, PPV, time-shifting, place-shifting, all while ensuring the content will be protected and only used as authorized" says Bill Krepick, president and CEO of Macrovision.
"The digital set-top box is expanding beyond its original function of providing secure access and delivery of video. There is now a clear, revenue-producing demand for recording and sharing digital content among consumer appliances throughout the home. In this emerging reality of shared digital content, it is important to acknowledge and maintain the digital rights of this content" comments Rich Nelson, senior director of Marketing for Broadcom's Broadband Communications Business Unit.
"Broadcom created the DRM Tool Kit as part of its commitment to achieve this objective. Our DRM Tool Kit complements existing conditional access delivery systems by extending the management content as it is recorded and shared with other devices. Broadcom is committed to working with the leaders of digital rights management and is pleased to be in partnership with Macrovision in this important endeavor."
MacroSafe is a multi-layered software solution that provides for the secure distribution and management of video, audio and other multimedia applications to a variety of devices, including PCs, set-top boxes and home media servers. It conforms to the MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 standards. The system includes AES and triple DES encryption, built-in tamper-hardening and separation of licenses and content to increase security and flexibility. The architecture supports revocation and renewability of licenses in case of security violations, as well as ease of implementation, and it consists of three major components: software tools for preparing content, Web services-based software for the secure delivery of content and licenses to clients, and a secure client that establishes an "island of trust" for the safe consumption of content.
